It has been confirmed that Hutchinson has indeed broken his leg – both his tibia and fibula have been fractured and the damaged left leg has been externally fixated (ie. put in a metal cage).
It's not known how long he will be out of action, but the usual recovery time for a tib and fib break is 12-16 weeks which would mean he would miss the beginning of the BSB season.

Hutchinson's 2010 season came to an abrupt halt during a British Supersport Championship race at Silverstone. On the first lap of the race held in wet conditions, several riders, including Hutchinson, fell due to the circuit conditions. Hutchinson was then struck by another rider as he lay on the track and suffered compound fractures to his tibia and fibula in his left leg. Hutchinson had said that he was determined to be fit for the start of the 2011 short circuit season.However, after 16 operations and skin grafts, the injury forced him to miss the start of the season, and ultimately withdrew from both the North West 200 and the Isle of Man TT.
