CBR1k Tokico caliper swap testimonials
***From Ervins

Ok the brakes on the stock 04,5,6 & 07 are garbage...We all know that. So I went ahead and got the Brembo 19x20 master cylinder and FrenTubo brake lines...Worked but was still lacking real good feel...It either bit or didn't...Not inspiring in the twisties...Stupid jackass who designed the set up definitely did not ride the bike afterwards...

So i went ahead and purchased some slightly used 07 CBR 1000RR calipers and Vesrah pads...Had the whole system bled and even used new fluid...

The result? ONE FINGER BRAKING...Sooooooooooooooooooooo much more responsive than the stupid stock calipers...Seriously I think the problem is more the calipers than the master cylinder but oh well, I am covered all around. I had a hard on riding home just braking for fun.

They are sooo much smoother...One finger and it starts to brake, brake, and bite...Not the normal grab a shitload and then it starts to brake and abruptly bite bullshit. Took it on some turns going quick to see how much better it scrubbed speed, took it on the highway to see high speed braking, came up fast to a stop and applied the brake...Friend did a half nose pick on it (scared the shit out of me), etc...The brakes worked flawlessly and the way I would want the brakes to react and feel.

So if you want to save yourself some $$ go get yourself on eBay and get yourself some 2006,7 CBR 1000RR calipers...$100 for the pair (My friend sold them to me). They also seem smaller which is not a bad thing.

Keep in mind, the stock calipers are 4 pad...The 1000RR is 2 pad...This was the difference it seems...I am very happy now.

So...Fugg you who spec'd out the front braking system for the 06/07 10R...You made me spend more money than I should have had to.

***From Fireman69

So the jury is in. The calipers are the solution to the brake fade issues that have been effecting my 05 ZX10. Best $50 I have ever spent.

So here is the skinny, 04-07 ZX10 calipers are the same minus the color diff.
04-07 cbr 1000 calipers are the same as well
Radial mount cbr600 (not sure of the years 05 06 I think) calipers are the same as the cbr 1000

So the options are getting even that much more diverse

Thank you to Ervins for being the pioneer on the CBR front

***From Drain Fade

Let's face it...the brakes that come on the '06-'07 ZX10R are horrible. Kawasaki thought that going to 4 pad brakes from 2 pad would yield better bite and an over all better brake experience. Ahhh...no, it's horrible. They switched back to 2 pad for '08 for a reason. Anyway, many people have found mods and even changed their master cylinders and brake lines and it still isn't fixed. The key is the calipers...which can be fixed in a number of known ways as of this writeup (08/31/08). The easiest bolt on fixes are zx14, concours 14 or 07 zx6r calipers. They are bolt on, no spacers needed...bolt them on, bleed them, and you're golden. The only drawback is that they're kinda pricey on Fleabay. Another option as found by Ervins on ZX-10r.net is '06-'07 CBR1000 calipers with 5mm spacers. I persued Fleabay and found a cheap pair for just over $100 and some 5mm spacers from Yoyodyne. For clarity they are Brembo 5mm Caliper spacers through Yoyodyne but the key is that they're 5.0-5.2mm thick x 24mm wide with a 10 mm hole. Get them anywhere if you can get them cheaper...through Yoyodyne they run for $10 a piece.

***from Mirkz

My 05 ZX10R has always had spongey brakes.

First thing I did was stick some EBC HH pads in it... which helped.... marginally in stopping power, but still quite squishy.

So I eventually went out and bought some braided lines and a new set of EBC HH pads.
my friends and I fitted these and spent the best part of an afternoon bleeding them.
I was still a little disappointed in the lever feel, however when I test road the bike it pulled up a lot harder than before. I was happy with the result for a little while, but then the sponginess of the lever got to me again, and I even had a few close calls when I'd slap the brakes on hard and it just wouldn't pull up as well as I thought it should've.

I tried to bleed the system at least 4 times after that, thinking maybe we didn't do a crash hot job. Not the case.
Eventually we were able to get a good feel but otherwise it was basically the same, particularly after some hard braking.

I had always thought the Master Cylinder was the fault of this, and came VERY close to ordering a brembo master cylinder offline, if the shop hadn't messed around and irritated me, I probably would've finalised it.

After the brake feel continually annoying me, especially after the riding we do around the place, and reading a few articles on here, I invested in some 06-07 CBR1000RR calipers.

This weekend, we fitted those.
As per other threads, you will need about a 5mm spacer to space the calipers from the forks, any machinist can make these... and the dimensions are actually listed in another thread somewhere.

So anyway, we cleaned the calipers up with some carby cleaner and toothbrush, particularly around the pistons. We fitted a new set of EBC HH pads to the calipers, then fitted the calipers and spacers and connected the lines back up.

We flushed the system with the remaining brake fluid left in the M/C, cleaned residue from the master cylinder that was left over from the previous fluid. Then we ran some Motul RBF600 Race fluid through it, we bled the calipers both sides a couple times with a pump type system, before doing a few manual bleeds.

At first I didn't think there'd been much of a change in lever feel, then after a few more pumps of the lever with everything locked up tight, I noticed it started to pressurise slightly and became a lot stiffer.

we hosed the bike down to neutralise any brake fluid that had splashed or leaked onto parts of the bike so that it wouldn't screw up any paintwork etc. (there was mainly only mess around the rim slightly as we'd covered most of the parts up)

On the way home I was pretty shocked to find that my brakes are alot better than before, I think the master cylinder could be on its way out, because it's been bled SO many times, but.... even still... I have one finger braking!!!

So far I am very pleased with the results, however now it's a bit learning curve to relearn my braking on the bike.

I've also got a track day next weekend which will really test the brakes, and I will post up again to give an updated evaluation of the modification.

But so far, I will say....

To those who are sick to death of the squishiness of your brakes...
before upgrading with that $500+ master cylinder.... go buy a set of CBR1000RR calipers, some good fluid and some good pads and do that first.
It'll work out cheaper.

So basically here's my current set up

Stock Master Cylinder
Goodridge braided lines
Honda CBR1000RR calipers
EBC HH pads
Motul RBF600 brake fluid

Result right now - very happy.

***Vio

Had a chance to properly test the CBR1K calipers & Carbone Lorraine C55 pad combo on my 2006 ZX-10R yesterday. All i can say is that I am very pleased.

First off, i did not experience any dramatic differences in braking power during normal riding like others have. I did however notice that the brakes do not grab as harshly as they did before. It is much smoother than before. There is more stopping power as the speed increases than before, but this is probably due more to the C55 pads than anything.

The biggest improvement to me is the fact that I have virtually no brake fade now. I made about 8 or 9 hard stops from approximately 120mph and the lever barely came in (maybe a half an inch at most). With my stock calipers and Galfer HH pads i would have been struggling with brakes at probably 3 or 4 stops because the lever would be nearly at the bar by then.

This, in my opinion, makes this upgrade entirely worth the money.

Another aspect for those considering this upgrade is that brake pads are cheaper for the CBR1K calipers because of the 2-pad design. For example, the Carbone Lorraine C55 pads cost me $99, but they are priced at $135 for the stock calipers. Keeping in mind that I only paid $75 for the calipers, within 2 brake pad changes I will have practically made back the money I spent on the calipers.

My current brake setup is as follows:
2006 CBR1000RR calipers
Carbone Lorraine C55 brake pads
Galfer SS brake lines
Motul 5.1 brake fluid
