Coppins eager to start pre-season work, Yamaha-Racing News 18/01/2008

Yamaha Motocross Team’s Josh Coppins is more determined than ever to see his FIM World Championship dreams come to fruition in 2008 after coming so desperately close last year. The 30 year old will shortly return from an active winter of training in his native New Zealand to embark on a busy pre-season spell of international races and tests before the first Grand Prix of fifteen in Holland on April 6th.

Image

“At the moment I am starting to work more on my riding and getting the hours on the bike but also keep up my physical training,” he said. “I leave New Zealand on the 28th of January and go straight to Italy where I will test my race bike. Then we have races at Mantova, Montevarchi , Valance and Hawkstone, all in a row. This year I will also work with Jacky Vimond (former 250cc World Champion). After this I will have three weeks off from racing and I will see what areas I need to work on; they may be speed, or the bike or fitness. I will do the first round of the Belgium championship the week before Valkenswaard and then we hit Grand Prix 1.”

Coppins has been honing his physical condition since December in his town of Motueka, with some local race appearances – including domination of Supercross outings in Australia and New Zealand - thrown in for good measure. His gym and cardiovascular itineraries have seen an intense timetable of activities from cycling and riding to rock-climbing.

“To be honest every year it gets better,” he said of his programme. “Every year we step-up the training and try to prepare better, but then so do my competitors! I did pretty much the same as the previous two years except I rode the motorbike a bit more and basically did more training than in the past. Last year we were struggling to do twenty hours a week, this year almost every week was well over that.”

The winner of five Grand Prix in his maiden season with the YZ450FM first had to let his broken shoulder heal. The injury meant that the Yamaha Motocross Team surrendered the MX1 crown they had owned since in 2004 and halted their phenomenal run of six titles. Coppins lead fourteen of fifteen rounds in 2007 until being forced to withdraw from the final race of the year. He insists that the ‘downtime’ he needed to recover from the break was a positive experience for his mental state approaching 2008.

“I spent some time doing nothing at home waiting for my shoulder to heal,” he revealed. “In that time I thought about the highs and the lows of 2007, the good and the bad parts of my season and most of all how I could improve for ‘08. I have a bit of a different approach now, mostly mentally, I think I am a stronger person now.”

In terms of his work with the Italian crew of YMT, Coppins also stresses that the 2008 version of his race motorcycle means he will be even more of a potent force come April.

“The new 2008 bike is a really good and I am happy because Yamaha addressed the few little issues we have from last year,” he remarked. “I tested the new bike for two weeks before I left Europe at the end of ‘07. There are only small changes but mostly to the chassis. They have made a big difference and it is a nicer bike to race.”

“There is not too much testing to do now as I am happy with how things are,” he continued. “We will try a few modifications that I have asked the team to try over the winter, but mostly it will just be getting time on the bike and getting comfortable again in Europe.”

DUNGEY INCREASES SUPERCROSS LEAD, Team Suzuki Press Office - January 20, 2008.

Team Rockstar Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey increased his lead in the AMA Supercross Championship by winning Saturday night's third round at Anaheim in California - his second victory in three races.

Image

RM-Z250-mounted Dungey now leads the West Coast series by 23 points from former Suzuki rider Broc Hepler (Yamaha).

He said: "I was just trying to be consistent. The track was really choppy and I made a couple of mistakes, but I just tried to not make the same mistake twice. We are just doing our program and trying to be as consistent as we can be."

In the Supercross class, Rockstar Makita Suzuki's Mike Alessi captured his second consecutive holeshot of the season in the 20-lap main event. Alessi charged hard on his Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450 and brought home a fourth-place finish. This is Alessi's best result of the season so far and he moved into third place in the series.

Team mate David Vuillemin won the Last Chance Qualifier and then had a bit of bad luck in the main when he stalled his bike. Even so, his 11th-place finish improved his overall standings in the championship points race.

Ryan Dungey:

"The first couple of practices were decent today. The whole team and I were working on getting the bike better for the heat and we definitely got it set up the right way. We won the heat race, taking the lead on the last lap, and it was great to get that win but the main is what counts. In the main, I got a good start and was in second for about five laps. Then I got in first… It was tough, though, I was struggling a little, but I dug deep and worked through it. The RM-Z250 worked great and the whole Rockstar Makita Suzuki team did a great job."

Image

Mike Alessi:

"It was a good race, partly because I've been trying to improve a little every weekend. Two sixths and now a fourth - I'm just gradually getting better every week. In the heat race I got a good start and was riding well and had a good flow and came in second. In the main, I got a killer jump and a big holeshot. Then I was in second for a few laps and then third, but I could tell the rider behind me was catching me. I tried to fight back but I couldn't get him. I started to push it a little toward the end and made a little mistake. So I thought, I'm riding good here in fourth, nobody's behind me so I put it on cruise control and kept being consistent. The RM-Z450 is running great and my mechanic and everybody on the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team are doing a great job, as always."

David Vuillemin:

"Practice was OK today, though I had a tough time getting used to the retro track. I was not happy with the heat race as I didn't ride very well. I was following other guys and had to go to the Last Chance Qualifier where I got a good start and won the race. For the main, I was all the way on the outside of the gate, but I got a decent start. I got up into ninth and then stalled the bike - my mistake - and a few guys passed me and I ended up 11th. Actually, the bike started easily on the second kick. I have to say that we've made a lot of progress in our testing and the RM-Z450 was really good tonight."

Supercross results: 1. Chad Reed (Yamaha), 2. Josh Hill (Yamaha), 3. Kevin Windham (Honda), 4. Mike Alessi (Rockstar Makita Suzuki), 5. Ivan Tedesco (Honda), 6. Tim Ferry (Kawasaki), 7. Nathan Ramsey (Yamaha), 8. Josh Hansen (Yamaha), 9. Andrew Short (Honda), 10. James Summey (Yamaha). 11 David Vuillemin (Rockstar Makita Suzuki).

Points: http://www.suzuki-racing.com/championsh ... x?SRS_ID=4

Lites results: 1. Ryan Dungey (Rockstar Makita Suzuki), 2. Broc Hepler (Yamaha), 3. Austin Stroupe (Kawasaki), 4. Dan Reardon (Honda), 5. Brett Metcalfe (Kawasaki), 6. Rob Kiniry (Honda), 7. Billy Laninovich (KTM), 8. Gavin Gracyk (Honda), 9. Justin Brayton (KTM), 10. Tommy Hahn (Kawasaki).

Points: 1 Dungey 73, 2 Hepler 50, 3 Reardon 49, 4 Brayton 47, 5 Lawrence 38.

BACK TO WORK FOR KAWASAKI IN SEPANG, Kawasaki-Racing news: 22/01/2008

The Kawasaki Racing Team's John Hopkins and Anthony West finally got their 2008 MotoGP campaign underway today, during the first of three days of testing at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia.

Image

After almost seven weeks off the bike, both Hopkins and West used this opening day of testing to get themselves back up to speed aboard their 2008 Ninja ZX-RR machines. Recalibrating the brain to MotoGP speed is always a difficult process, but an inconsistent track surface with varying degrees of grip made the job even more challenging for both riders today.

Hopkins quickly mastered the tricky conditions, increasing his pace with every run, but his teammate joined a list of unfortunates, including Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi, who were caught out by the inconsistencies in the track surface.

On his last run of the day West lost the front going into the final hairpin, bringing his first day of testing to a premature end after crashing without injury.

Despite this being an acclimatisation day for the riders, both were able to start the evaluation process on new chassis and clutch components on their Ninja ZX-RR machines. This test and evaluation program will continue in earnest tomorrow, when Hopkins and West return for an intensive second day of testing, which will include a comprehensive tyre evaluation in conjunction with Bridgestone.

But while the workload promises to be punishing, the two regular race pilots will receive some welcome assistance from Kawasaki test and development riders, Olivier Jacque and Tamaki Serizawa, both of whom also completed a full schedule of testing today.

John Hopkins, 68 Laps - Best Lap 2'02.628
"Today was all about getting back up to speed on the bike after such a long layoff, but still we managed to test some new chassis and engine components, with positive results. Overall the bike feels improved over the bike I last rode in Jerez back in November, but we will only get to see the full potential of the new parts once we start the fine-tuning process over the next two days. Tomorrow we start tyre testing with Bridgestone, but we'll also continue working to improve the set-up of the bike, before switching back to focus on this completely during the final day here in Sepang. It's been a good start today, but tomorrow the real work begins."

Anthony West, 56 Laps - Best Lap 2'03.387
"The first day back on the bike after a long break is always a bit of an experience. You feel like you're really motoring, only to come back to the pit box and find out that you're way off race pace. But it all comes back quite quickly, and I managed to improve my times with every run today. Unfortunately my day ended slightly earlier than was planned, after I lost the front at the hairpin. I turned in at the same speed as on my previous laps, but I think my line was a little bit different and I hit a bump as a result. Anyway, the front tucked under and down I went, luckily without injury. Despite the crash it's good to finally get the season underway, and I'm looking forward to getting back on the bike tomorrow."

Kawasaki Technical Manager
"It was a steady start today, but already we've had positive feedback from all four riders on the changes we've made to the bike for 2008. The real work starts tomorrow when we start the process of refining the set-up of the bike, and working our way through a pretty heavy tyre testing schedule with Bridgestone. Running four riders during a test like this puts the team under some pressure, but the amount of data we collect definitely makes it worthwhile, as it allows us to accelerate our development process."

Test times:
1. Randy De Puniet (FRA) Honda LCR 2'01.377;
2. Dani Pedrosa (SPA) Repsol Honda Team +0.487;
3. Chris Vermeulen (AUS) Rizla Suzuki MotoGP +0.697;

Rizla Suzuki MotoGP on the pace from day one, 22/01/08 Suzuki-Racing News

Rizla Suzuki MotoGP racers Chris Vermeulen and Loris Capirossi started the 2008 pre-season testing schedule in good form today, as both riders recorded times inside the top-four.

Image

Vermeulen completed 57 laps of the 5.5km Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia and recorded a best time of 2’02.074, to give him third place on the timesheets. Team-mate Capirossi also made a strong start to his ’official’ Rizla Suzuki MotoGP career by recording the fourth quickest lap of the track with a fastest time of 2’02.416 during his 61 laps.

Both riders took the first steps in a huge test programme that will continue not only at this test, but also forthcoming events in Australia, Spain and Qatar, to make the Suzuki GSV-R as competitive as possible come the start of the racing calendar. Vermeulen and Capirossi tested new aerodynamics, electronic control strategies, and new Bridgestone constructions and compounds - as well as the new 2008 GSV-R engine - and will also evaluate a new chassis and swing-arm specification, and a further comprehensive test of the latest generation of Bridgestone tyres. Suzuki’s two Grand Prix stars were able to use the 2008 spec engine during today’s tests and although further refinements are still required, both riders noticed a big step in performance from last year’s machine.

Rizla Suzuki MotoGP has two more days at Sepang before it moves on to Phillip Island in Australia next week.

Chris Vermeulen:
“It was good to finally get back out on the bike, although I did feel a bit rusty this morning! It’s been nearly seven weeks off and when I first went out it was quite exciting for the first couple of laps because my GSV-R is a bit quicker than my Suzuki RM250 back at home! Suzuki has done a great job in the off-season and we had a lot of new parts to test on the bike. We tested almost everything and found lots of positives and found new direction in which we could go, which makes it even better. We did a lot of tyre testing for Bridgestone and they have also done a good job since we last rode the bike, so everything at the moment seems to be going well. It’s only the first day, but hopefully tomorrow we can improve on today and take more steps forward.”

Loris Capirossi:
“I am really happy with everything and I think Suzuki, and the test riders, have done a great job with the bike since the last test. We tried many things and we still have more settings and things to try over the next two days to get the best package for me on the bike. I know we have a long way to go still, but this was a very positive first day of 2008! It was also really good to be out in the Rizla blue for the first time as well, I am happy to be part of this family!”

Yamaha's challenger getting ready for another big season, Yamaha-Racing News 04/02/2008

Having participated in two successful winter tests in Qatar and Australia the Yamaha Motor Italia World Superbike Team is already in a high state of readiness to meet the challenge of the forthcoming World Superbike Championship season.

Image

Noriyuki Haga and Troy Corser (both Yamaha Motor Italia (YMIT) WSB Team) continue their riding partnership for a second year, after taking a total of 24 podiums between them last season. Japanese superstar Haga came within a meagre two points of winning the riders’ championship outright on ‘07, ending the campaign with six victories to his credit.

In the Qatar test last November both Haga and Corser made immediate improvements even compared to the strong results obtained by their 2007-spec Yamaha YZF-R1 machines, and carried on their good work in the subsequent test last month, at Phillip Island. These venues are the first two on the WSB calendar, the 5.380km circuit of Losail again enjoying its now traditional status as the season opener, on Saturday 23rd February; one week ahead of the Australian round, on Sunday March 2.

In the Qatar test Corser was particularly fast from the outset, with Haga matching him on the final day, while the changing conditions of the Phillip Island tests provided more of a challenge to both riders and technical staff. Everyone in the highly respected YMIT WSB squad worked hard to make final adjustments to the 2008-spec Yamaha YZF-R1 and help the championship’s single make tyre supplier with feedback on their latest development tyres.

Image

Yamaha Motor Italia’s YZF-R1 Superbike, a new model in 2007, was the tool with which Haga and Corser helped earn Yamaha the Manufacturers’ Championship, and the 2008 version has undergone a comprehensive programme of development over the winter months. The race machine now runs Yamaha’s revolutionary YCC-I variable intake system, as fitted to the original road bike. Even in early trials this unique Yamaha innovation showed its potential, and in testing has provided smoother and more torquey engine response in the midrange, reduces the massively powerful R1’s desire to wheelie in the lower gears and yet still maintains its class-leading top end performance.

Due to recent changes in the WSB technical rules four-cylinder machines can now run at a minimum weight of 162kg, and the R1 has lost mass due to a new swing arm design, lighter Akrapovic exhausts, a carbon airbox and even a new lightweight wiring loom to meet that new lower limit exactly. The latest rear swing arm is a step closer to the state of perfection that demands more feel with less unsprung weight; more ultimate performance with longer tyre life. The latest generation of Öhlins suspension units also make a significant contribution to the weight loss programme, and have already shown measurable improvements during the track tests.

The look and graphics of the 2008 machines are based on the 2007 versions, while a new logo joins existing sponsors Santander, Sika, Akrapovic and Fabbri on the flanks of the R1. FIMER, a welding machine company that has long links to Yamaha Motor Italia (even taking over the premises once used by the Yamaha importer in its early years) has now signed a three-year deal to support the efforts of the official YMIT team in WSB.

The 15-round 2008 season is set to be a stiff challenge for all comers, with four long haul races instead of two, Qatar; Australia; USA and Indonesia, and four individual venues which are either new to World Superbike entirely or have been missing from the calendar for a decade or so.

Image
Noriyuki Haga (Yamaha Motor Italia WSB Team)

"We will have 30 individual races this year and many good riders have now entered the World Superbike series, including six Japanese! I’m looking forward to a good battle with all of them. I think World Superbike will be more exciting than MotoGP this year, so people should come along to their local race to see the close battles. I feel that the performance of all the riders and teams will improve a great deal so the biggest threat is difficult to see right now. We must see more of the competition first. Suzuki and Ducati were strong at the Philip Island tests, but we have not seen the new Honda. We’ll have to wait for that. Our YCC-I variable intake system will improve acceleration and make the engine performance more useable everywhere. It worked very well at the Phillip Island tests. Our whole machine is very competitive, but like always in racing, we are still seeking points to improve. We are determined to continue the improvements on the 2008 R1 all year, starting from this moment.”

Image
Troy Corser (Yamaha Motor Italia WSB Team)

"Our test in Qatar was particularly good and we also worked through a lot of new things in Phillip Island. The engine on the machine is definitely stronger and lots of other aspects are improved now, especially the electronics. We weren’t that concerned about absolute lap times at the Phillip Island test, we just wanted to get lots of time on the bike to try out all the equipment that we had to test there. For me that test was to make sure we started the season with the best equipment and information we could get, and to get us all working well together once again. The new suspension is definitely an improvement; it’s just a case of spending more time with it now, and we will have that chance in the two-day test at Qatar soon. Same with the YCC-I system, which we felt a difference with straight away. I know Yamaha has been working hard over the winter and after the last couple of days of testing, we will really be ready to go. I think it’s going to be a tough championship but I haven’t been looking at the other riders too much at this stage.”

Massimo Meregalli - Team Coordinator, Yamaha Motor Italia WSB Team - has been impressed by both his men and his machines already, and knows that the team should start the season in great shape. “We had a very good test at Qatar and although we found some more work to do in Australia we were still satisfied with our progress on the bike. It was a big improvement in Qatar, and in Australia we went faster than we did last year - faster than we had ever gone. “Overall, we expect to have some small advantage over the manufacturers who will arrive in 2008 with new machines, and we will see what the real potential of the new 1200cc twins are in races, not testing. The main thing is that we know our bike is already better than the way it finished the season with a double win in Magny Cours last year, thanks to many areas of development. One is reduced weight and we will start on the weight limit of 162kg. Another example is the new rear swing arm that has proven to give both the guys a more positive feeling on the track.

Right now we are ready to race, very focused on our main goal, and everyone knows what this is. We have two absolute top riders and in my opinion we have the very best rider combination. Nori and Troy have a lot of experience, and have a strong motivation to reach the goal. We have never seen Noriyuki so willing to do extra work in testing. He was doing more than one long run per day and that is a great sign.”

Final pre-season preparations will be carried out in a two day test at Qatar on 12 and 13 February. The first round begins for real with first practice on Thursday 21 February, continues with Superpole qualifying on Friday 22 and culminates in race day, Saturday 23 of February.

Honda RC212V riders return to Sepang for second MotoGP test, Honda-Racing news February 5, 2008.

The second MotoGP test of 2008 at Sepang, Malaysia opened today with just five regular championship challengers present. With teammate Dani Pedrosa absent due to hand injuries sustained on day one of the previous test at the track, Nicky Hayden is working overtime evaluating the performance of the Repsol Honda factory team V-4 800cc RC212V four-stroke.

Image

Hayden spent the limited track time running chassis comparison tests in combination with a variety of Michelin front and rear tyres. At the Phillip Island test Hayden rear grip was an issue but Hayden was happy with tyre performance today finding improved grip on the edge of the 16 inch tyres he tested today. Hayden crashed at turn 15 near the end of the day escaping unscathed from the incident. The team will continue chassis comparison testing tomorrow.

The Gresini Honda team of Shinya Nakano and Alex De Angelis are in attendance together with the Yamaha squad of Rossi and Lorenzo and several test riders from other factory teams.

Rain on Monday had left the track surface in a greasy condition and the first rider to venture out was Gresini Honda rider Alex De Angelis. The young Sanmarinese and his technicians planned a full day of tyre testing for Bridgestone but De Angelis crashed after just nine laps but returned to the track to complete 41 laps on the day.

Shinya Nakano on the second Gresini RC212V worked on refining chassis settings with changes to geometry based on the feedback from the test held at the track last month and his three-day stint at Phillip Island.

Image

Honda rider lap times and quotes.

Nicky Hayden, Repsol Honda: 2m 01.949.
“We got a late start because the track was not in good shape after the overnight rain. Nobody was in a hurry to go out. When we did we all went together and cleaned up the track a little. We ran comparison chassis tests and confirmed what we learned at Phillip Island. The guys changed the geometry a little on the 2008 chassis so we made some progress there. Michelin gave me a couple of rear tyres I really liked, one 16 inch and one 16.5 both have good grip on the edge of the tyre and the bike felt a lot better. We will keep on working on the chassis tomorrow and test more tyres.”

Shinya Nakano, Gresini Honda: 2m 02.317s – 55 laps.
“We tested some geometry changes on the RCV today and found a good specification for the chassis at this track. The set up gave me more stability entering the corners. For the test tomorrow we will use the same specification as our base set up while we test tyres for Bridgestone.”

Alex De Angelis, Gresini Honda: 2m 03.231s – 41 laps.
“I did not have a good feeling with the front end of the RCV when I went out this morning and we were working on trying to improve that when I crashed. After the crash I waited until the track conditions improved before going out again. Tomorrow I will need to get in as many laps as possible to improve the front end and learn more about the way the RCV behaves at this track.”

Rossi Feeling Positive After Impressive Times in Sepang, Yamaha-Racing news Sepang 05/02/2008

The second Fiat Yamaha Team test of 2008 began in Sepang, Malaysia today, with Valentino Rossi picking up just where he left off at the same track 12 days ago. After several teams opted to test at Phillip Island last week, it was a somewhat depleted MotoGP field on track today and Rossi and new team-mate Jorge Lorenzo shared the track with just seven other riders.

Image

Rossi topped the time sheets today with a blistering best lap of 2’00.300, over 0.3 seconds faster than the existing best lap of Sepang, which the Italian set himself back in 2006. Rossi set today’s time on a Bridgestone qualifying tyre on his 62nd of 64 laps, but he also recorded improvements in his times with race tyres as he continues development with his new tyre manufacturer. Team-mate Lorenzo chose to stick to race tyres today and posted the fourth fastest time with a lap of 2’02.654

Valentino Rossi - Position: 1st Time: 2’00.300 Laps: 64
“Today was a positive day for us and I really enjoyed myself. We started to work more on the bike and to adjust the suspension and balance to suit our tyres. I have a very good feeling and the lap times have improved compared to last time, both with race tyres and with the qualifying tyre. It’s a big deal changing tyres – not as big as changing bikes but all the same I have needed time to understand how to ride the bike differently and now I’m learning more and more how to get the best from the Bridgestones. My fitness has also improved compared to last time and this is also helping me to ride better, so I think that we’re in good shape at the moment.”

Davide Brivio - Team Manager
“It was a good day for us and the times show that we are on target. This morning the surface was quite dirty but it improved this afternoon and Valentino was quicker than at the last test both on race and qualifying tyres. His fitness is also better so this is enabling him to improve his overall performance. Tomorrow we will continue with our testing programme and hopefully we can improve further on this good start.”

Lorenzo Working Hard To Improve Set-Up in Sepang

New Fiat Yamaha pilot Jorge Lorenzo resumed the task of getting to grips with his YZR-M1 in Sepang today, ahead of his inaugural MotoGP race in Qatar in one month’s time. After a promising showing here last time out, Lorenzo and his team’s clear focus for this test is to refine and improve set-up, and they began work today with the same bike they used at the last test.

The Spaniard’s main issue to address is front-end feel going into the corners and he was disappointed not to make more progress in this area today. Nonetheless his engineers were able to gather some important information and they will continue with their task tomorrow, as well as resuming tyre testing with Michelin. Lorenzo posted the 4th best time of the day, his lap of 2’02.654 coming on the 24th of 57 laps.

Jorge Lorenzo - Position: 4th Time: 2'02.654 Laps: 57
“We are working as we planned but unfortunately today we haven’t been able to improve as much as we hoped on the problems we had at the last test. The biggest issue is the feeling I have with the front-end going into the turns; I need more confidence in this area so we still have some work to do to find the key. We have some more ideas after today so tomorrow we will try again, working in a slightly different direction, and hopefully we will be able to make more progress on this.”

Daniele Romagnoli - Team Manager
“We didn’t improve as we wanted to today and Jorge is still lacking some confidence in front, which means we’re not fast enough going into the turns. Despite this it’s not a wasted day as our engineers were able to collect a lot of data and they and the team will analyse this tonight, prepare a schedule for tomorrow and go from there. The bike is the same as the last test but the goal is to improve the set-up and solve the issues which are affecting Jorge. We will keep working tomorrow and see where we get to!”

Hayden gets RC212V chassis dialed in at hot and humid Sepang, Honda-Racing News February 6, 2008.

The second day of MotoGP testing at Sepang was run in extremely high temperatures and high humidity the thermometer registering mid 30 degrees with a track temperature rising from an early 46 to peak at an incredible 60 degrees at one point.

Despite the sweltering conditions Nicky Hayden was an early starter managing to get in 90 laps at Sepang today completing the chassis comparison test the HRC engineers had planned for this test. The Repsol Honda team technicians managed to improve the chassis specification of the factory RC212V and find suitable Michelin rubber to suit the set up in the extreme conditions. Hayden ended the day in positive mood and with nothing more to learn he heads for home in the US for a break but eager to get to the next test at Jerez, Sothern Spain in nine days time.

The Gresini Honda all new rider line-up of Shinya Nakano and Alex De Angelis for the 2008 season have gelled with the team technicians quickly establishing a good working relationship with the squad and have made impressive progress during winter testing.

De Angelis makes no secret of the fact that the Sepang circuit is not one of his favourite’s but despite that the MotoGP debutante has knuckled down working hard refining chassis settings to try and cure a persistent niggling front end chattering problem around the 5.548 km track. De Angelis put in 57 laps today and managed to better his best lap time of yesterday. The Sanmarinese also tested qualifier tyres for Bridgestone but could not get the best from the sticky rubber with the set up he used in the high temperatures.

Nakano worked on suspension set-up mainly and now finds the machine more comfortable to ride. The Japanese star then moved on to do some tyre tests for Bridgestone. But at the end of 59 laps he could not find better tyre performance than during yesterdays test - either with race rubber or qualifying tyres.

Gresini Racing will remain at the track to complete the three-day test.

Honda rider lap times and quotes.

Nicky Hayden, Repsol Honda: 2m 00.900s – 90 laps.
“Not too bad all in all a positive two-days testing. The team have worked extremely hard for me from day one of testing this year, the HRC engineers and the mechanics . Today we didn’t focus on just one thing but worked on chassis comparison tests and working on tyres with Michelin. The track surface temperature was as high as it’s ever been here and we got some positive feedback on tyres in the conditions. We found a good rear that gives good grip on the edge of the tyre. The front we tried was OK but we went back to the front tyre we had used at the last test. The chassis is now OK and we will have the new engine ready for the next test. It’s been a pretty busy time and we go at it again in Jerez before the big show opens.”

Shinya Nakano, Gresini Honda: 2m 02.049s – 57 laps.
“We started the day on the same base set up we ran yesterday then made some changes to the suspension before testing for Bridgestone. I was more comfortable on the bike today but we did not find any tyre combinations better than we ran yesterday and I didn’t better my lap times on either race tyres or qualifyers. We have one more day of testing here so I hope we improve a little tomorrow.”

Alex De Angelis, Gresini Honda: 2m 02.646s – 55 laps.
“We worked mainly on the chassis today but could not improve on yesterday. We have quite a lot of chattering at this track and it made it impossible to run consistently good lap times. Later I tried the Bridgestone qualifying tyres but could not use them effectively. Tonight we will check the data to see which direction we take in testing tomorrow.”
