The word "Concho" comes from the Spanish word "concha" meaning shell. It can be traced back to the Greek word "konkho" which also meant shell.
Chances are if you are fan of westerns you probably know what a Concho is. It refers to silver ornaments that adore chaps, spurs, leggings, bridles and belts of Hispanics (in the south western United States), Anglos, and Indians (especially those belonging to the Navajo tribe) and most importantly cowboys. These silver ornaments are shaped like little discs. Alternately they may be of other metals other than silver like brass and even non metals such as leather). The Conchos found on saddles are usually in sets of eight.
Conchos are particularly popular with western style apparel or those that follow that motif. They are also found these days on hats and stylish belts.
