MotoGP makes history in the desert, Yamaha-Racing News, Doha, Qatar 29/02/2008

Fiat Yamaha Team rider Jorge Lorenzo joined the rest of the MotoGP grid in somewhat unusual conditions today, as the World Championship’s first ever night-test got underway in Qatar. The test is the final one of the pre-season before the first race is run by night at the same track on 9th March.

Image

Lorenzo lost no time in getting to grips with his new circumstances, and with 5.4 million watts lighting the track he, like most other riders, found the conditions different but no more difficult than by day. He concentrated on developing his set-up, testing Michelin tyres and just getting used to riding the M1 around a track at which his last experience was riding a 250cc machine to victory in much warmer temperatures. Lorenzo finished the day in an impressive second position after 77 laps, whilst his team-mate Valentino Rossi was ninth.

Jorge Lorenzo - Position: 2nd Time: 1'56.019 Laps: 77
"On this first night of testing in Qatar I was more curious to see how it was riding at night than anything else! I am happy with this idea and honestly speaking I felt I immediately got used to the conditions. Of course at the beginning it feels a bit strange but after few laps things become quite normal and your eyes get used to the new light. The strangest feeling I had was that I felt…lonely! Riding in the night, although the light is very strong, makes you feel alone with your bike, so you must keep the concentration very high because of course you are not alone! The right lines do not change because of the light, only when braking do you see your shadow getting closer, and that’s why you always must be alert, in order not to get confused with the shadow of another rider! As far as our performance is concerned, my time was very good today but I think with some more work we can be faster still. Tomorrow, when I am more used to the new light, the track and to the cold temperatures, we will try to do even better.”

Daniele Romagnoli - Team Manager
"It was a positive day for us. Obviously it was a very different test for the team and for all the technicians, a little bit more difficult than usual but I have to say that we did not have any major problems. The rider did not feel any particular difference than riding by day; of course he took some laps to get used to the light, but after that he started riding like it was by day. We started with the basic set-up of Jerez, with just a little change to adjust it to this track. We worked on the riding position, which we slightly changed, then we worked on the electronics, mainly on the power delivery. We also focused on the tyres today and I think we did a good job. We collected new information in these conditions, which are very different from the previous races here. Tomorrow we will be working in the same direction and hopefully we will be faster."

Fiat Yamaha Team rider Valentino Rossi, who won the race here two years ago, was unfazed by the unusual conditions however and it was soon business as usual for the Italian, who finished the night’s work in ninth place.

Image

One of the main aims of the first night’s testing for Rossi was to work with Bridgestone to find the best tyres to suit the conditions, which are of course considerably cooler than during the daytime tests and races of the past four years. He also worked on general set-up as the team try to maximise the final hours of pre-season track time as the clock ticks down towards the first race. Rossi completed 82 laps overall and posted a best lap of 1’56.749, whilst team-mate Jorge Lorenzo was second fastest with a lap of 1'56.019.

Valentino Rossi - Position: 9th Time: 1'56.749 Laps: 82
“There was a lot of curiosity about this night test and I have to say that I am quite satisfied. I think they have made a great job with the lights and you can ride quite normally, as if it’s day. The visibility is quite good so there is no danger for us; it’s really no more difficult than riding in the day. Maybe it would be better to move this night race to a period when the temperature is a little bit higher however, because at the moment it’s very cold here! Today we have worked a lot on the bike set-up, but we were not so fast and we are still missing some grip in acceleration. We tested several different tyres and settings, but I am still sliding a bit when I open the throttle and the front is going a bit wide. We know that this track doesn’t have the best grip, but other riders are going faster, so we must do better. We have a couple of ideas for tomorrow and I am sure we will be able to improve.”

Davide Brivio - Team Manager
“As far as the light is concerned, after one hour testing things seemed to be normal. We got used to the new conditions very quickly and everything worked well. The lights are not a problem, but the temperature is! Maybe it would be better to ride in Qatar when the temperature by night is a little bit higher. The track temperature is equal to the air temperature - low! At the time of the race it was only 15°, so it is a limiting situation concerning tyre performance. As far as the bike is concerned, we still have some work to do to increase our performance here and we especially need to improve the setting in order to make the tyres work better in the low temperatures. Tomorrow we will be testing new settings and materials from Bridgestone and we will try to be faster than we were today.”

Troy Corser (Yamaha Motor Italia WSB Team) set the fastest lap on the first day at Phillip Island, posting a 1'32.366 lap time on his 17th out of 21 laps.

Despite suffering bruising and a pain from two crashes in last week's opening SBK round, Noriyuki Haga battled to 13th today, finding his current suspension settings less than ideal for the ever-changing Phillip Island track surface.

Lorenzo shines in the Qatar night, Yamaha-Racing News Doha, Qatar 01/03/2008

Fiat Yamaha Team rookie Jorge Lorenzo proved he is more than ready for his MotoGP debut with an impressive display at the final pre-season test in Qatar tonight. The 20-year-old topped the time sheets on the second night of floodlit testing at the desert circuit, lapping half a second under the existing pole record on Michelin qualifying tyres.

Image

Lorenzo, who was victorious in the 250cc race here last year, was also fast throughout the day on race tyres as he worked on refining the setting of his M1 in preparation for his competitive entry into the premier-class. His race simulation towards the end of the night’s work heralded impressive results before he tried out some qualifying tyres, setting his lap of 1’54.552 on his 73rd and final lap.

Jorge Lorenzo - Position: 1st Time: 1'54.552 Laps: 73
“I am very happy because we have done two days of testing with a very good rhythm throughout. Our performance has been consistent, which is very important after the trouble we had at the last test and this makes me confident for the first race. The race simulation today was really positive, although I think we still need to do some work on the rear of the bike which might allow us to be a bit faster. Despite all these positive signs we must keep our feet on the ground, because I have never raced with the other riders and the first race will be a new experience for me! Next week many things will be different so we must remain focused and hopefully maintain a good rhythm. I am happy because I think people understand now that I am ready for this, and this is very important for me and for my confidence. I do not have experience in MotoGP so I cannot say how this championship will turn out, but let’s say that without experience the winter tests were good and with some experience the championship might be even better!”

Daniele Romagnoli - Team Manager
“It was definitely a positive test for us. We were able to improve the basic set-up of Jorge’s bike and we were also able to finish the tyre testing program we had planned for this test. I am pleased to say that we have confirmed the improvements of the Michelin tyres and we have also collected a lot of important data for the first race here in Qatar. Now we have a couple of days to analyze and work on this information in order to come back here to Qatar in the best shape possible for the first race. We made a race simulation today and we were very satisfied with Jorge’s performance and consistency. Now we are confident that we are approaching the first race in good shape and having made the most of our winter tests. We are looking forward to coming back here and seeing Jorge make his debut racing for Yamaha.”

The second night of the first ever MotoGP night test in Qatar saw Fiat Yamaha Team rider Valentino Rossi running into some unexpected problems, finishing the test tenth overall. Rossi and his crew spent the day working on Bridgestone tyre testing and set-up, but were unable to find time to complete a planned race simulation.

Despite a less than positive last day of preparation, Rossi remains confident that he will be in good shape for the first race, which will take place under the floodlights in ten day’s time. His best lap 1’56.256 was set on his 69th of 83 laps.

Valentino Rossi - Position: 10th Time: 1'56.256 Laps: 83
“I cannot say I am happy with this test and speaking honestly I expected to be faster here. Unfortunately we wasted some time working on the set-up of the bike to try to adapt it to some tyres that we then decided to abandon. Once we’d made this decision we worked with different tyres and things improved a bit, but the test was nearly over and we didn’t have enough time to complete all the work we wanted to do. Because of this I did not do a race simulation, but I was able to make two good runs. Unfortunately however it wasn’t enough time to improve as much as we could have and I am still lacking a couple of tenths. Generally speaking however all of the winter tests, barring this one, have been positive for us; I was fast in Sepang and fast in Jerez. It’s a pity that I wasn’t able to be fast here as well, but we have some good ideas for the next week and this does not dent my confidence.”

Image

Davide Brivio - Team Manager
"We expected to be faster here in Qatar, but we have collected a lot of useful information. We will have to exploit the next four hours of practice in the best way next week, in order to be able to fight at the front. Our engineers have some ideas to apply to the bike, so we will try to make things better. We must improve, this is obvious, but we know we still have one full weekend to work on our bike. Generally speaking, our winter testing was satisfactory and so, despite this last test, we maintain our confidence for the start of the season."

Toseland and Edwards eager to race after impressive end to winter testing

James Toseland and Colin Edwards proved they are ready for the start of the 2008 MotoGP season after the Tech 3 Yamaha team successfully concluded a long winter testing schedule in Qatar tonight.

Toseland came tantalisingly close to topping the timesheets for the first time in his short MotoGP career after an inspired performance on the second night of testing under the Losail International Circuit’s floodlights. Toseland led the way for three hours tonight after posting a best lap of 1.54.592, with the British rider taking full advantage of Michelin’s dominant qualifying tyre. His time, which was 0.5s faster than Valentino Rossi’s 2007 pole position, was only bettered with just seven minutes remaining when fellow Yamaha rookie Jorge Lorenzo went faster by the narrowest of margins.

Edwards was also on fine form to post the fourth fastest time, with the American delighted at significant improvements made by new Michelin race tyres. Edwards set his best time on a Michelin qualifier, but long distance runs on race tyres produced encouraging results.

The Tech 3 team now has a short break before the 2008 season gets underway with the historic first night race in Qatar on March 9.

James Toseland 2nd 1.54.592 – 52 laps
“I know this track pretty well so it didn’t take too long to get into the groove of the place even on this bike. But to do the time I did and finish second is pretty amazing. I don’t think I did a 58 on my superbike, so to think I’m four seconds faster than a superpole lap is incredible. And I’m half-a-second under Valentino’s pole and that is really encouraging. It just shows how much my confidence has grown with the Michelin qualifying tyre because you really have to trust how to get the best out of the extra grip. I knew it was a quick lap but it was a little bit faster than I expected. It was just great to see all those great names underneath mine. It would have been nice to finish fastest but I’m still happy. I wanted to come to MotoGP and be competitive and I’m showing I can. Now I can’t wait for the first race. Luckily for me the experience of the Tech 3 team, and Michelin and Yamaha working so hard, it is all coming together very quickly. It is only because of the experience of the people around me that performances like this have come so quickly. My guys have brought me to this level much quicker than I expected, and hopefully we can convert the good testing performances into the season.”

Colin Edwards 4th – 1.55.464 – 50 laps
“Today we mainly tested tyres to try and find a good race tyre and give Michelin some good information. I found a race tyre I really liked. Yesterday in my long run my fastest lap was a 57.3, which isn’t going to be fast enough. With the tyres I found today I did an eight-lap run and on that last lap I did a 56.4. And that was with 22 laps on the rear and 26 laps on the front. I don’t know if a 56.4 on the 22nd lap is good enough to win the race but I’m sure Michelin will bring us something even better for next weekend. I know James liked a new Michelin front and I’d tried it before him and I fell in love with it. We’re not talking five per cent better but it felt 25 per cent better. It works so well in the cold temperatures so Michelin has been working really hard. To come here and find a front tyre that I’m that happy with and James is also happy with shows we are definitely moving in the right direction. This place you generally always have an issue with front tyre grip because it is such a hard track on the front. But now we don’t have any issues and that’s credit to Michelin. I’m excited for the first race. The Tech 3 team, Yamaha and Michelin have been working really hard and as whole team we have done a great job this winter.”

Troy Bayliss (winner - Race 1 and Race 2)
"It's something you dream of, to have a double win and I knew this year it would be difficult to achieve but I have a great team behind me who all worked really hard. overnight They had to build a new bike for me from scratch after my crash yesterday. I had a few ups and downs this weekend. After Race 1 I was struggling with the last 6 laps but in the end I managed to take the win. In the second race the tyres were a little slower but I felt better on the bike which was more consistent and a pleasure to ride. After race 1 I was so tired but after the second one I felt great. I had to concentrate hard today as in the second race, even though I was ahead I was aware I had to keep it together and put in some consistently good laps. It's been incredible, great weather and some good racing. I know there will be fighting to come later this season so two wins like that was just fantastic."

Carlos Checa (6th & 2nd):
“We are still new to this, a new rider on a new bike but at one stage of race two I thought I could win. Then I realised that Bayliss, like in race one, had a bit in reserve. Second is a good result for this stage of the season. My pace was enough to pull away from Xaus and Nieto, but there are still areas of the bike to improve. I didn’t have a lot of time to get back from the medical centre after the crash in race one, but we just made it for the restart. I didn’t feel ready to race right then and considering this we did OK in sixth.”

Michel Fabrizio (3rd place - Race 1)
"All in all, it was a good day. I'm sorry for what happened this morning on the grid but the bike failed to leave the start line and that unfortunately caused an accident. The blow to my leg from the impact from David Checa's bike meant that of course my leg was hurting a lot during the restarted race 1 but I gritted my teeth and did what I had to do. Then there was the jump start in race 2. I realised straight away that I'd done it and unfortunately after the ride-through penalty that they gave me, I wasn't able to catch the others. A big thank-you goes to my team today as they had to completely rebuild my bike between the two races, literally from the frame, so I'm very grateful to them."

Troy Corser (2nd and DNF)
"There were a few tough passes in that first race, but I never panicked even when I got run wide a couple of times. The bike wasn't perfect and we were moving around a bit too much. We were going as fast as we could sideways! We made changes for race two and it was a lot better. Overall a podium in race one was not too bad. They definitely held the start too long in race two. It was like the starting light was on, on and then on some more, then it went off. It was way too long to wait. I knew I had moved, but I had stopped again. Anyway I felt much more confident on the bike and in control in race two but it seemed to me that there was a small line of oil on the corner and that's what it felt like - tucking the front on oil. I thought there would be bikes coming into the gravel trap after me. We learned many things this weekend and I think we could have finished second in race two at least, maybe even challenged Troy Bayliss."

Noriyuki Haga (8th and 7th)
"My physical condition was OK today because I had a very effective massage from the Clinica Mobile people, so thanks to them. This whole weekend has just been down to a lack of grip. It feels like the first two races this year have just been an exercise for me. We have not had the chance to build our performance on the bike so it feels like our season will start in the European races."

Fonsi Nieto - Race 1: 5th, Race 2: 3rd:
"I am happy because I got a podium on a very tough day of racing and also because I am now second in the championship. In the first race, my gearing was too short and, because of the wind, I was on the limiter all the way down the straight. So, fifth was not so bad.

"In race two, I pushed as hard as I could, but Bayliss was impossible to catch, but I am happy because I ended up on the podium. My idea is to be very consistent this season and keep taking points whenever and wherever I can, because it is a very long season. I want to thank my team for all their hard work. The guys had to change both engines in the bikes and that was a lot of work for them, but I hope my podium was a good way of saying thank you."

Max Neukirchner - Race 1: 7th, Race 2: 5th:
"My general feeling is that I am a little happy because I managed two good finishes and had no crashes! We made the rear a bit stiffer for race two, but I felt that it wasn't much improvement from the first race. I thought a podium would be possible but I got held up by a group of riders and couldn't get past. But I think my main problem in the second race was that I lost a lot of time in the very first lap.

"At the moment, I am not entirely happy with how the chassis of the bike is working and I feel sure that we can improve it. I am having trouble getting on the gas exiting the turns and that is costing me a lot of time - especially at a circuit like Phillip Island. That could be a chassis problem, set-up problem or tyre problem, or it could be a combination of those things. We'll work at finding the solution, but hopefully we will do this at the Valencia tests."

Ruben Xaus - 4th & 4th classified:
“I achieved two good results, very precious for the championship final ranking. I chose to run wise races because I didn’t want to take a chance as the next two rounds will take place on two tracks where I got my best results last year. Today in race-1 I had an hard fought until the final lap, while in race 2 I paid for the higher speed of Suzuki and I chose not to attack Fonsi Nieto at the three last laps to the chequered flag”.

Max Biaggi - double retired:
“It has been a bad week-end. I had what it takes to do well but in race-1 I slid off on the front at the slow-speed hairpin, falling to the ground unexpectedly. In race two I was really near Nieto, he braked early so I had too downshift with the gear which was quite hard in this race so I lost the control of the machine falling to the ground again. Anyway the biggest problem was the 16th position on the starting grid due to the gear level hitch occurred yesterday during the Superpole. That event influenced also today’s two race”.

Ryuichi Kiyonari:
“I am too slow at the start of the race but every time I go out our settings get better and I am more and more comfortable. I am very happy with my result, but not happy with the beginning of the race. I will have to improve my qualifying in order to get a better position at the start. But I will continue to work hard. The feeling with the bike is getting better, the machine feels good and the set up was fine, I just need to go faster.”

Roberto Rolfo:
“During the first laps of race one I was very fast, but starting from the seventh lap I felt some vibrations coming from my rear wheel. Race two was really strange. I made a big mistake, starting too early. When I saw some riders opening in front of me I also released the clutch lever, but it was a jump start.”

Kenan Sofuoglu:
“The beginning of the second race was all right. If I am relaxed on the bike I can join the guys up front in the fight. But in the second part of the race I’m just losing physical power and control. I don’t know how to control the power of the bike yet but am improving day-by-day.”

Gregorio Lavilla:
“I thought my front tyre was going to be no good in the second race but I just rode through it, adjusted my style a bit and found I was catching some other riders. We get our 2008 bikes soon and that should allow us to make even greater steps.”

Reed back on top with Yamaha 1-2 in Indianapolis, Yamaha race report, 03/03/2008

After missing the top five in an AMA Supercross event for the first time in 88 starts last week Yamaha's Chad Reed bounced back to record his sixth victory of the season and finished ahead of brand-mate Josh Hill at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis last weekend. The Australian headed a YZ450F '1-2' on the podium of the ninth round from seventeen in the series - an FIM World Championship - to give Yamaha their fourth win at the venue and first since 2002.

Image

The 25 year old, who took some time to get into a rhythm during practice on a track he helped design, determinedly seized the holeshot and disappeared with the main event Saturday evening in front of Hill and Andrew Short. It was his first ever SX class success in Indianapolis although the result did extend his impressive tally of five podiums in five starts at the Dome.

"I struggled in practice - I was second both times - and I think that wasn't cool to design the track and then not be the fastest guy," he commented. "But I redeemed myself in the main, and it just feels awesome to be back up where we belong."

"I'm so happy to get this win," added Reed who had gone two rounds without a triumph after previously setting a record with victory in every Californian event. "A second place and a sixth position really isn't that bad, but in my book, it sucks. I just wanted to get back out here and get on top. I'm just looking forward to Daytona now. It's one of my favourite races in the world, and I can't wait."

The former champion now leads the standings by 34 points over Kevin Windham.

Hill made the podium for the second time while Nathan Ramsey (eighth place) and Josh Hansen (tenth) ensured that the YZ450F scooped four positions in the final top ten; more than any other manufacturer. Grant Langston was still unable to compete, having to sit out with an eye complaint.

"It's Kevin Windham," said Hill who had to pass the Honda man and Reed's main title rival for his podium slot. "I've been watching him since I was like seven years old. It's just amazing for me to be up there racing with him and dicing with him. I had to ride really aggressively out there tonight. There was only really one fast line, and it was on the outside, so you had to just push it in there and take a line away."

Teenager Tyla Bowers was seventh on the YZ250F in the East Coast Lites class and currently lies fifth in the standings.

Round ten takes place this Friday at International Speedway in Daytona.

Brno triumphs in the annual IRTA 'Best Grand Prix' poll, HONDA RACING INFORMATION 06/03/03

The magnificently sculptured Brno circuit, home of the Czech Republic Grand Prix, topped the IRTA ‘Best Grand Prix’ poll for the 2007 MotoGP season. Set in the Moravian hills 200 km to the East of Prague the city of Brno is a centre of engineering excellence and automoto competition has been a constant feature for 50 years and first hosted international motorcycle races on the fearsome 13.4 km closed road course.

The first GP was held on the old course in 1965 with three legendary world champions taking the honours, Mike Hailwood was victorious in the 500cc race, Jim Redman at 350 level with Phil Read the winner of the 250cc GP.
The completely new man made 5.403km track was constructed and opened in 1987 and three younger legendary champions emerged victorious in their title winning year; Wayne Gardner taking the 500cc win, Toni Mang took the chequered flag in the 250 class with Fausto Gresini the 125cc race victor.
The circuit is unique in that it resembles an old style road course with swooping downhill turns and elevation changes of 74 mts that put a premium on front wheel grip testing the riders skills to the maximum.

The new circuit set the standards that all new circuits have to match. Safety was the prime consideration and Brno features large run-off areas but without detracting from the view the race fans have of the action, much of which takes place in a huge amphi-theatre like valley. Medical facilities, under the supervision of Chief Medical Officer Ivo Dedek MD, are state of the art and Doctor Dedek oversees 100 staff during practice and racing 30 Doctors and 24 ambulance crews among them.

Clerk of the Course Mirek Bartos, assisted by an excellent performance by his team, again played a key role ensuring all on track action ran smoothly. The track marshals are first class and the vastly experienced circuit staff are the masters of all they survey. Circuit administration was efficient and ever helpful with the varied requests put to them by the teams and riders.

Event sponsors, Cardion AB, is a company with close connections to motorsport and Brno. Their core business is distributing medical products on the Czech market as commercial representatives for many prestigious producers of medical appliances. Their success in this field has enabled Cardion AB to expand their activities to include motorsport with the company owners the majority shareholders of the Brno circuit and sponsors of the racing team.

Brno has performed exceptionally well since its inauguration and has been one of the consistent all-time trophy contenders taking its first IRTA Trophy in 1999. The second success came in 2004 and Brno has since retained a top three position in the annual poll finishing a close third in 2005 and runner up in 2006 regaining top spot in 2007 with another outstanding performance.

The Masaryk Circuit at Brno has hosted more grands prix than any other circuit on the calendar with the sole exception of Assen and joins Catalunya and Valencia as three times winners of the coveted IRTA Trophy. Only Mugello has topped the IRTA poll on more occasions with four Trophy successes. In the 2007 poll Valencia took second spot just ahead of Jerez. All three circuits man made facilities that host successful safe and entertaining grands prix on an annual basis.

“On behalf of all concerned with the Czech Grand Prix at Brno I wish to thank all the IRTA teams who voted for the circuit in the IRTA poll for ‘Best GP of 2007.’ Said Clerk of the Course Mirek Bartos. “To win the Trophy for a third time is very satisfying and shows the dedication of all the people who contribute so much to make a success of the event. We have set high standards and will continue to improve where ever possible. We have a very good relationship with IRTA and the teams and this award is a reflection of our collaboration. We thank you once again and look forward to welcoming you all to Brno in August.”

IRTA President Herve Poncharal gave a glowing appraisal of the Brno event. “Brno deserves to be voted ‘Best Grand Prix of 2007’ everybody involved tries so hard to make life easy for us when we race there. The race organisation is first class, the circuit is very safe with lots of run-off, track marshals are among the best that we work with and the facilities are excellent. When the circuit opened back in 1987 the facilities were unique and set the standard for all new circuits to equal.”
“Brno is an artificial man made circuit but it’s like a real road race track, very technical with elevation changes - we love to race there. We have seen some fantastic close races at Brno I will always remember the unforgettable Criville – Doohan battle in 1996.”
“It is also very exciting to see that the former East block countries are very enthusiastic about MotoGP and the Czech Republic has always been first to show this with Brno the central attraction. On behalf of IRTA I wish to congratulate all involved with the GP at Brno on the latest and well deserved Trophy success.”
