Twelve months ago, American Ben Spies was fighting for his championship life in the World Superbike series. Spies entered the series a rookie but quickly became a force on production-based Superbikes, setting poles, winning races and generally impressing the hell out of a lot of Europeans.
After he won the WSBK title, Spies said that the trick to riding a Superbike is to know when to "bear down" on it. Legend has it that Spies actually braked so hard in WSBK that he once spooned a tire off the front wheel of the R1 Superbike running into a corner, causing a crash.
Now with six months on the M1 prototype, how does Spies compare the two world championship Yamahas, the M1 vs the R1?
"The M1 is a whole different animal from a Superbike," he said. "I can't say it's specific to the R1, but when the setup on a Superbike is that little bit off, you can do different things on the bike to ride around problems during the race, and still make that fast lap time happen. You've just got to do a couple different things. On the GP bike, when you've got it working well, and you're riding well, the lap time's there, and sometimes it feels like you're not even having to put in so much effort to do the lap time. But when the setup is that 15% off, it doesn't matter how hard you ride the thing, it just doesn't go around the corners as good as the other bikes, and you can't make the lap time, no matter how hard you try and what you do different on the bike, because it's more a mechanical setup, a geometry setup, than a problem you can ride around."
"That's one big thing. It gave me confidence (at Brno) that the bike was working pretty good, better than I've had it working all weekend, and my fast lap times were easy. That was confidence-building. It might not happen every weekend, but now I know that feeling, and I know when it's right I think I can run good times. That's just the difference. The bike setup is way more important on a MotoGP bike than a Superbike."

The American MotoGP rookie will make the move from the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 squad to the factory set-up next season.
