ENUDURO NEWS 13.11.2007

KTM leads the way after Day one of Six Days
American Kurt Caselli onboard his KTM 300 emerged victorious on day one of the ISDE Six Days Enduro in La Serena Chile.
The gruelling annual event sometimes call the “Olympics” of Enduro motor sport tests the endurance of both man and machine over a range of challenging terrains. After the first day, the lead in the coveted World Trophy team competition went to France followed by Finland and Italy in the minor places.

Caselli (E3) completed day one with a 13.222 advantage over Frenchman Johnny Aubert (E2) with E1 world champion and KTM Enduro Factory Team rider Juha Salminen (E2) in third place overall, 13:786 behind the leader. Salminen is the defending champion. Top E1 rider on day one was Spanish rider Cristobal Guerrero.

A total of 20 teams are competing for the coveted World Trophy and this year 52% of riders are onboard KTM machines, a tribute to the performance and reliability of the world’s most popular offroad sports motorcycle.

Day one of the six day competition hugged the Pacific coastline and the sandy beaches of the area south of the competition base at La Serena, some 470 km north of the capital Santiago. The Chilean coastline is characterised by desert like dunes and riders set off for the day’s endurance test in the saddle in temperatures of just 9 deg. C.

Apart from the overwhelming presence of KTM machines in the paddock and on the course, the KTM Acerbis Support Team is also on hand to back them up. The course for Day two also tackles the sandy dunes south the La Serena.

November 14, 2007 (SUPERBIKE NEWS)

Team Suzuki Press Office - November 14, 2007.

AMA Superbike and Superstock Champion Ben Spies has been nominated for the prestigious AMA Pro Racing SPEED Athlete of the Year award.

The Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 rider, who retained his SBK title this year after a season-long battle with team-mate Mat Mladin, is amongst five hopefuls in line for the award, which will be presented this Sunday at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino.

Said Spies: "I was nominated for 'Athlete of the Year' for the first time last year and I'm really excited to be nominated again. Out of all the racers in the AMA, only a handful is nominated. This year I won the AMA Superstock title and I backed that up with my second AMA Superbike Championship so I had about as good-a-season as I could have possibly had. Even though I would definitely like to win the award, I'm also very proud just to be nominated."

The other nominees are: AMA Supermoto rider Mark Burkhart, Flat Tracker Ken Coolbeth, AMA Formula Xtreme Champion Josh Hayes and AMA Supercross Lites Champion Ryan Villopoto.

Sepang Testing Day 1
MotoGP test Sepang Malaysia, first day of three-day test November 15, 2007.

De Puniet fastest Honda on opening day of Sepang MotoGP test

The opening day of the three-day MotoGP test at Sepang saw three Honda RC212V riders take to the 5.542 km track as they step up preparations for 2008 a season rich with promise of spectacular two-wheel motorcycle racing of the highest level.

The 2006 MotoGP world champion Nicky Hayden to run with both the first version of the 2008 prototype Repsol Honda RC212V factory machine and the bike he raced in the 2007 series but the weather saw the American rider spend all his time aboard the 2007 model. MotoGP debutants Randy De Puniet (LCR Honda) and Andrea Dovizioso (JiR Scot Honda) both rode RC212Vs in 2007 specifications.

Hayden’s team-mate, Spaniard Dani Pedrosa elected not to attend the Sepang test as he completed all the testing he needed on the new bike during the first test at Valencia last week. He feels he would learn nothing new and better to wait until the latest version of the machine is ready to test at Jerez on November 27 - 29.

When the day opened the track surface still had some damp patches and Hayden was one of three riders to crash at the first corner within a few laps of the start, John Hopkins (Suzuki) and James Toseland (Yamaha) joining Hayden as victims of the conditions.

Frenchman Randy De Puniet has adapted well to the RC212V Honda and was the fastest Honda man on track today, despite crashing the LCR machine mid afternoon, just before the rain started to fall.

The LCR Honda team tested with their 2007 RC212V and new rider Randy De Puniet, allowing the Frenchman to continue the process adapting his riding style to the characteristics of the Honda. De Puniet put in 45 laps around the Malaysian circuit while testing to find a base line set up, engine maps and a selection of Michelin tyres. The Frenchman recorded a best lap time of 2m 03.033s, the fastest rider of the day despite a crash.

The second Honda MotoGP debutante testing at Sepang is Italian Andrea Dovizioso riding for the JiR Scot Honda team, an amalgamation of the Japan Italia Racing team and Kopron Scot Honda squad. Dovizioso, 125cc world champion in 2005 and consequently twice runner-up in the 250cc world championship, spent his day testing to find an ideal base set up to work from at Sepang then worked on the engine braking system of his RCV.

Nicky Hayden, Repsol Honda: 2m 04.164s - 56 laps. “Everything didn’t get off to a good start today crashing on the fifth lap of a three-day test isn’t so smart. I was just about to get off the brakes when I went down it was very bright and I didn’t notice the damp patches, I was going pretty slow and I’m OK. It’s the oldest excuse there is to say ‘There must have been something on the track’ but three guys gong down in the same place? That kinda put us on the back foot but the boys fixed the bike an we got in some decent laps but with the track being damp in the morning and the rain coming after lunch we didn’t get a whole lot done. We planned to take the new bike out after lunch but the rain prevented that. The new bike is the same as at Valencia but we planned to run some different power curves on the engine.”

Randy De Puniet, LCR Honda: 2m 03.033s - 45 laps. “Not so bad today. We started with the old set up for 20 laps then I came in to make changes to the front and rear suspension to suit my riding style. We found a good balance inside 40 laps then we worked a little on the engine mapping. I had a small crash just before the rain started, the front end turned in on me at the fast right hand corner at the back of the grandstand. I am satisfied with the first day pity about the rain because we need to get as many laps as possible to help me understand the bike better but I think we are working in a good direction, taking things step by step.”

Andrea Dovizioso, JiR Scot Honda: 2m 03.607s - 22 laps “I am very much more at home on this circuit than at Valencia and I am very happy with the bike - it’s big, fast and a lot of fun to ride. My lap times are very good and that surprised me because I do not yet have a really good feel for the bike in the way I want – there are so many things for me to understand about the bike before I can go fast. I am not yet confident with the engine braking because the back end slides a lot and I cannot use the front brake as I need to – if I had less engine braking I could focus more on the front brake. We have two-more days and I’m confident we will improve.”

Rain interrupts testing for Fiat Yamaha Team in Sepang

Heavy rain in Sepang drastically limited track time for the Fiat Yamaha Team today, as they began three days of testing in Malaysia alongside several other MotoGP teams. With Valentino Rossi still at home recuperating from a broken hand, it is just Jorge Lorenzo taking part in the team’s testing programme this week, the 20-year old Spaniard riding the M1 for the second time since the end of the season as he prepares to officially join the team in January.

After rain early in the morning it took some time for the track to dry out and Lorenzo did not get started until just after 11am. The MotoGP rookie completed 26 laps as he continued to develop his understanding of his new bike and tyres and was looking forward to continuing his work in the afternoon, but another heavy rainstorm after lunch meant the track did not dry out sufficiently again and the team abandoned testing for the day. Lorenzo posted the 9th fastest time of the day with a lap of 2’04.433, with the unofficial time sheets topped by Randy de Puniet, in a time of 2’03.033.

Jorge Lorenzo (9th, 2’04.433, 26 Laps)
“It’s a pity about the weather but overall the first day has been quite positive, even if I haven’t been so fast. We managed to do 26 laps before lunch and then the rain came and we weren’t able to do anymore, so hopefully it will be better tomorrow because we have a lot to do! All the time I’m feeling more natural on the bike and I can feel the difference from Valencia, but I need to make a few changes to my riding style in order to fully adapt and we’re working on this. It’s hard for me to use all the power at the moment and I need to learn to be slower and smoother in the corners and to open the throttle a bit earlier. I’m struggling a bit to find the fast lap times but this is normal because there is still so m uch about the bike that I don’t understand. Tomorrow we have some new things to try, including a new fork, and I will just keep on working steadily.”

Daniele Romagnoli – Team Manager
“Today we started with Jorge at what is a very different track to Valencia, so we began with a base set-up from Yamaha while he got a feel for the bike on this track. He is starting to learn and understand more all the time about the MotoGP bike but he needs to improve some things and one of the things he’s concentrating on is braking deeper into the corner. He doesn’t have the best feeling going into the corner at the moment; he’s got some lack of grip and he’s not 100% comfortable and so we’ve been trying some different engine braking settings to try to improve this. We already have some plans about how to improve the package for him but unfortunately the rain stopped us today and so tomorrow we will start again and see where we get to.”

Masahiko Nakajima – Fiat Yamaha Team Director
“Unfortunately we were only able to test for three hours today so we couldn’t do very much. There are two main aims for this test; the first is to help Jorge become fully accustomed to a four-stroke bike, especially in relation to the engine braking character, which is very different to what he’s used to on a two-stroke. The second thing he has to get used to and understand quickly is the carbon brakes, which are very different to the steel discs he has been using in 250. These are two major factors for the rider to understand and they also influence the entry into the corner, so he has a lot to learn in these two areas. Once he has overcome these factors then we are confident he will quickly be able to develop in other areas so this is where we’re focused for these three days.”

Unofficial Lap Times
1. Randy de Puniet (Honda) 2’03.033
2. Chris Vermeulen (Suzuki) 2’03.357
3. Colin Edwards (Yamaha) 2’03.406
4. Andrea Dovizioso (Honda) 2’03.607

Sepang Testing Day 2

MotoGP test Sepang second day November 16, 2007.

De Puniet the fastest Honda rider at Sepang – Hayden test the 2008 RC212V

The second day of the three-day MotoGP test at Sepang, Malaysia got off to a slow start as the rain drenched track surface did not begin to dry until late morning with the first riders taking to the track at noon.

Repsol Honda factory rider Nicky Hayden tested both his 2007 RC212V and the 2008 prototype RCV he will race next season. The American went out on the ’07 machine to start his days work and was quickly setting times a second faster on the machine than his best time of yesterday.

Satisfied he had collected sufficient data for an engine comparison test Hayden then switched to the new machine. He worked on engine mapping as the team worked hard collecting valuable data necessary to upgrade engine performance in preparation for the next MotoGP test at Jerez on November 27-29. Hayden also tested a range of new front tyres for Michelin.

The 2006 world champion also had a close encounter with a Cobra during the afternoon session hitting the snake with his knee in the fast T 11 corner. Hayden emerged unscathed from their meeting and will test tomorrow - sadly the snake will not be there to watch his progress aboard the new RCV.

LCR Honda rider Randy De Puniet was again the fastest Honda rider at Sepang and slashed eight-tenths of a second off his best lap time set on the opening day. The Frenchman has adapted quickly to the characteristics of the RC212V and is clearly enjoying his new career at LCR.

He spent the majority of the day testing a range of Michelin tyres in combination with the Ohlins suspension the team will run in 2008. De Puniet ran over 20 laps on the same set of tyres gaining a feel for tyre performance over a long distance. The test revealed more plus points than negative with the tyre-suspension combination and the hard working De Puniet ended the day in buoyant mood.

Andrea Dovizioso is beginning to get to grips with the RC212V Honda 800cc four-stroke. The young Italian continued to chase an ideal base line set up for the JiR Scot Honda working on improving his feeling for the Michelin tyres he will race with for the first time in his career. Dovizioso was out on track for 57 laps of the 5.542 km circuit consistently lapping in the 2m 03s bracket before putting in three very fast laps in the 2m 02s bracket that saw him end the day as fourth fastest man with a time of 2m 02.591s, over one second faster than his best time of yesterday.

Honda rider quotes and lap times.

Nicky Hayden, Repsol Honda: 2m 03.093s - 65 laps. "Overall I'm really pleased with today, it's been very positive. We could have ended up with no track time today after getting to the circuit and having to wait three hours for the track to dry. In the end it was a good day. I went out on the 2007 machine first to confirm a few things and within a handful of laps I'd gone one second faster that yesterday so that was pretty encouraging. Then I devoted most of the afternoon to the 2008 machine. We played around with the engine mapping and tried some front tyre options from Michelin. We're still looking for a bit more power but it's not easy, the machine is brand new so all the team is learning. After the Valencia test last week we thought it might be a tough ask to come to Sepang and do as well as we have today - we thought we'd be further away, so to do the lap time this afternoon and match the 2007 machine lap time is very positive. And I smoked my first snake, the poor thing. I was just heading through turn 11 when the snake sat up and I saw it but I was committed on the apex of the corner. I picked the machine up and tried to avoid him but caught him with my knee. I'm pretty sure it was a cobra and I'm sorry for it."

Randy De Puniet, LCR Honda: 2m 02.550s - 81 laps. "I am very tired, I did 81 laps all in the heat of the afternoon. But it was positive, especially the tyre testing with Michelin. I tried four different rear race tyres and found one that was very good, very consistent, with many laps between 2'02.5 and 02.8. My best time today was set using the latest Michelin tyre, 0.5s faster than yesterday. Although this is just the first day of testing the Ohlins suspension on the Honda I have a good feeling and I'm we can find a faster set-up. With Honda we also worked on the engine mapping, to reduce the level of traction control and improve the braking stability. I'm very happy and the main thing is that over many laps the Honda is physically easier and less tiring to ride than my previous bike."

Andrea Dovizioso, JiR Scot Honda: 2m 03.591s - 57 laps. “Another good day for us. Once more I spent the day getting acquainted with the RC212V. We are getting to know each other better, but it is still difficult adjusting from the two-stroke 250. Engine braking is the big thing – you have it on a four-stroke 800, but very little on a two-stroke 250! This affects my entry into the corners, although I still feel fast in the middle of the corner. It will all come with time! The team and I will look at the data tonight and see where I can make up some more time and improve my performance. The middle and exit of the corner is still easier on the MotoGP bike than on a 250 thanks to the electronics. I’ve improved my feeling from the front-end of the Honda after some setting changes and after testing some new Michelin tyres which is very important.”

News Sepang, Malaysia 16/11/2007
Lorenzo makes steady progress in Sepang

The Fiat Yamaha Team completed an intense second day of testing in Malaysia with 2008 rider Jorge Lorezo today, despite a wet track first thing delaying the start of action until after midday. Heavy rain overnight and an overcast sky throughout the morning meant the Sepang track took a long time to dry out but, once the sun finally shone through the clouds, the temperature quickly rose into the low 30s, the asphalt dried and work got underway.

Lorenzo continued to work on general set-up with his new team, concentrating specifically on improving his braking and also completing a few laps on the new 2008 prototype M1. He improved on his time from yesterday, completing 48 laps and setting the 10th fastest lap of the day in a time of 2’04.021, with the quickest lap of the day set by John Hopkins in a time of 2’02.200. Tomorrow will see the team complete one final day of testing before they head home to Europe.

Jorge Lorenzo (10th, 2’04.021, 48 Laps)
“Today was hard work and I am honestly quite tired after six hours of riding in this heat! We worked on a lot of new things with the setting and I feel like I am making progress in some areas. I’m still having trouble under braking though and I don’t feel so comfortable with the front end; we made some improvements today in this area but I know we have more to do and I still have a lot to learn and some changes to make to my riding style. I was able to do a few laps on the new 2008 bike today, which I enjoyed and, even though it was only a few laps, my feeling about it is quite good. The most important thing at the moment though is to improve the feeling with the front end and so we will try again tomorrow! I hope that we have a completely dry day so we can use all of the testing time and have a good last day.”

Daniele Romagnoli – Team Manager
“When we finally got started early this afternoon Jorge was having some difficulties on the brakes and wasn’t completely comfortable in the front end. We therefore adjusted some settings and worked on giving him a better feeling so he was able to do more laps at a time. He is improving but the major factor we need to work on still is the braking. Tonight we will check some data and analyse the situation together with the rider to work out how to improve things for him tomorrow. We are making progress but we have a lot of work to do still and we hope the weather will remain dry so we can take full advantage of our final day.”

Masahiko Nakajima – Fiat Yamaha Team Director
“Today Jorge did almost six hours straight and this is a long time to be concentrating and riding in this heat, so I think he’s a little bit tired tonight! We had the time to try many things today and it seems that we’ve found a good direction in which to work towards the right base setting for him, so this is something positive. He also completed a few laps on the new 2008 prototype bike, just to get his initial feeling, which is quite positive. We’ve continued to work with him specifically on stability under braking and acceleration and he’s definitely making progress and improving in these important areas as he becomes more used to the bike, but there is still more work to do. The braking point is something quite progressive so we hope that tomorrow he can make the next step in this area.”

Unofficial Lap Times:

Circuit: Sepang
Date: 17/11/2007

THREE SUCCESSFUL DAYS IN SEPANG FOR KAWASAKI
The Kawasaki Racing Team head back to Europe today, after concluding three successful days of development testing at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia.

John Hopkins, riding the Ninja ZX-RR for only the second time at this test, was pleased to finish the final day an impressive third fastest overall, after quickly getting to grips with both the circuit and the characteristics of Kawasaki's MotoGP racer.

Hopkins identified a number of areas where the Ninja ZX-RR could be better matched to his distinctive riding style during his inaugural test aboard the bike immediately after the season ending Valencia Grand Prix. With less than a week between the Valencia and Sepang tests, the Anglo-American was impressed to discover that Kawasaki's engineers in Japan had already made improvements to the bike based on his initial feedback.

Modified clutch, engine and chassis components all but eliminated the chatter Hopkins experienced in Valencia, giving the #21 more confidence in the front end of the bike and allowing him to put in the fastest lap ever recorded aboard the Ninja ZX-RR on race tyres around the 5.548km Sepang circuit.

Hopkins was pleased with the positive progress made over the three day test, and happy with the working relationship developing between him and his new crew. The new Kawasaki pilot heads now for Southern Spain, and the final three-day test of the year, determined to use the technical and demanding Jerez circuit to perfect the set-up of his Ninja ZX-RR ahead of the winter break.

Anthony West also declared himself happy overall with the Sepang test, although the 26-year-old Australian was a little disappointed not to have finished closer to his new team mate on the time sheet.

As well as evaluating new engine components, West used the three-day test to focus on finding a good base set-up on his Ninja ZX-RR; a process he was unable to accomplish this year after being thrown in at the deep end with the Kawasaki Racing Team mid-season.

Despite concentrating on set-up rather than looking for a fast lap, West ended the final day of testing eighth fastest overall, and just over half-a-second behind fellow Kawasaki pilot, Hopkins.

Like his team mate, West is also looking to end the year on a high-note, and he heads for his MotoGP debut at the Jerez circuit determined to move further up the timesheet during the final three days of testing before the winter test ban comes into force.

The Jerez test takes place 27-29 November and will be the final outing for the Kawasaki Racing Team in 2007.

#13 - Best Lap 2’02.659
"We haven't really been looking for a fast time over the three-day test, but instead concentrating on working our way through a number of different set-ups to give me some idea of how different changes affect the feeling of the bike. It's important work, and it's what I was missing this year, coming in as I did halfway through the season. But, even though I know that the work we're doing now is important for next year, I'm still a little disappointed we didn't get the opportunity to try for a really fast lap. That's the racer in me I suppose. Overall, the past three days have been very positive, and I'm enjoying working with my new crew to try and improve the bike further. It would be good to end the season with a good, fast lap and, although I've never ridden the Ninja ZX-RR at Jerez before, that's what I'll be aiming for when we head there at the end of the month."

Kawasaki Competition Manager
"Overall we can be very happy with what we've accomplished over these three days. It's only John's second outing on the bike and already he's gone faster on race tyres than we've ever gone here before, which is very encouraging. His whole approach to this test has been extremely positive and the feedback he's given to his crew and Kawasaki's engineers means we will be able to make another step forward with the bike ahead of the year's final test at Jerez. Anthony has also done some excellent work here, evaluating different set-ups on his Ninja ZX-RR and learning a lot about how changes to the set-up affect the feeling he has on the bike. This will stand him in good stead for the future. But, although this test has been very positive, we're under no illusions about what lies ahead. We know this is a good circuit for the Kawasaki, so it will be interesting to see how much progress we make at Jerez, which is completely different in character to Sepang."

Successful Sepang test for Rizla Suzuki MotoGP

Rizla Suzuki MotoGP has completed its second 2008 pre-season test at Sepang in Malaysia today with satisfying results that Suzuki and the team believes it can build upon in the coming months.

Chris Vermeulen was able to give the 2008 prototype Suzuki GSV-R a comprehensive test at the 5.5km Malaysian circuit to assess what improvements and developments are needed in readiness for an assault on next year’s championship. He was regularly amongst the fastest riders on race tyres throughout the test and even a small crash at the end of the third day did not dampen his enthusiasm for the new bike. Vermeulen carried out in-depth evaluations of the 2008 machine and conducted a long distance run on the final afternoon in the searing Sepang heat, as track temperatures reached 55°C.

New Suzuki rider Loris Capirossi, in only his second outing for the Japanese factory, was able to get onboard the 2008 bike for the first time at Sepang this week. He began the three-day test with a thorough appraisal of the 2007 machine to enable him to totally understand the workings of the GSV-R, before changing to next year’s model on day two. Although almost a third of the test was lost to bad weather, Capirossi soon got to grips with the new bike and was consistently lapping faster than he had done on this year’s machine.

Rizla Suzuki MotoGP will now assess all the data obtained from this test back at the factory, before it moves on to Australia, back to Malaysia, Australia again ,Spain and finally Qatar for more pre-season tests in preparation for the 2008 MotoGP World Championship that gets underway at Doha in Qatar next March.

Chris Vermeulen:

“It’s been a great three-day test here in Sepang. We started out with the 2007 bike with the same settings that I had for the race and then we transferred them to the new prototype ’08 bike. It was definitely a step forward, and speaking with Loris he had similar comments – so that was great. We tested a lot of things here including engine maps, traction control, chassis set-up, new Ohlins suspension and of course lots of tyre testing for Bridgestone. It has been a very busy few days but I am extremely happy with the progress that we have made. Today we concentrated on a longer run and I did the furthest distance at about two o’clock in the afternoon when the track was at its hottest – like it would be on race day – and the bike performed really well and we were quicker than we were in the race. So all-in-all it’s been a very good test for us!”

Loris Capirossi:

“I am quite happy after this test. We did a lot of laps and my feeling for the bike is getting better every time I ride it. We tested a lot of different things so I can get an understanding of the bike and the team will be able to know what I want to make sure I can go quicker. Every time we went out we tried something different with the settings, and the mapping of the bike and at the end of the last day we found something that was a really good improvement, but we didn’t have enough time to work on it. The whole test has been very positive and I am impressed with how everything is going. We will keep working hard through the winter and I am looking forward to the next tests and making more steps forward – I am enjoying my work, it’s fun!”

Paul Denning – Team Manager:

“It has been a good three days for both guys. We got through an enormous amount of work and have certainly made significant advances with the 2008 prototype GSV-R.

“Chris was quick and consistent on race tyres throughout the test and he did a long run today, in very high heat and humidity, that was well inside his race-lap times here so that shows the new bike is going in the right direction.

“It was good to see Loris on the ’08 machine and his feedback and comments were almost identical to Chris’s, so the guys back at Suzuki will now have an indication on where we need to improve things.

“We still have a long way to go before the start of next season, but these first two tests have been very positive and we need to keep heading forward so that we are as strong as we can be when the first race gets underway at Qatar next year!”

Sepang Testing Day 3

MotoGP test Sepang third and final day November 17, 2007.

Honda RC212V riders complete successful three-day MotoGP test at Sepang

The three Honda RC212V riders present at the Sepang, Malaysia MotoGP test ended a gruelling but positive three-day test satisfied with the progress they have made as they begin the arduous task of preparing their equipment for the 18 round MotoGP World Championship series in 2008.

In dry conditions with lower ambient temperatures than on the previous two-days it was Repsol Honda factory team rider Nicky Hayden who set the pace. Hayden, 26 from Owensboro, Kentucky took to the track on his 2007 machine for the final time running 22 laps before later testing with the 2008 prototype RC212V.

The 2006 MotoGP world champion fitted qualifying tyres to his ’07 RCV and scorched round the 5.542km track in a time of 2m 00.592s. His lap time was a massive 1.3s under the pole potion time set by his team-mate Dani Pedrosa for the Malaysian GP last month.

Hayden then turned his attention to development work on the RC212V Honda he will campaign in the 2008 MotoGP World Championship. The team worked on the engine mapping and electronics on the ’08 machine and working with tyre supplier Michelin testing a range of new race tyres.

LCR Honda rider Randy De Puniet has been in stunning form on his Honda debut but the Frenchman crashed his RC212V today badly bruising his thumb. The crash came at T 7 a double right hand corner at the back of the circuit when De Puniet lost the front end. The data recorder showed De Puniet was carrying the same speed as the previous lap. The team technicians initial feeling was that the crash was due to a combination of a well used front tyre and a new grippy rear that placed too much stress on the front of the bike.

De Puniet returned to the track after treatment and continued working with his Ohlins suspension and tyre testing for Michelin but he failed to better his best lap time of the test he set yesterday.

Italian Andrea Dovizioso (JiR Scot Honda RC212V) continued his impressive form in his MotoGP debut testing sessions again bettering his best lap time for the second successive day. Base set up work and further experiments with the engine braking system of the RCV and tyre testing occupied Dovizioso’s time on the final day of testing. He has developed an excellent understanding with the Michelin engineers as confirmed by his consistently improving lap times this week. The MotoGP newcomer cut four-tenths of a second off his previous best lap time at the test.

The final MotoGP test of the year will take place at the Jerez circuit, in southern Spain on November 27 – 29.

Honda rider quotes and lap times.

Nicky Hayden, Repsol Honda: 2m 00.592s - 85 laps. "Overall we've had a good final day and it was nice to set the fastest time. We wanted to check a couple of details with the 2007 machine just before we said goodbye to it. The bike really worked well with the Michelin rear qualifying tyre, plus the track has definitely been cleaner at this test than at the race in October and the temperature for that fast lap this morning was a lot better than on the Saturday of the Grand Prix when we qualified – which was about the hottest day of the year here. Today we also worked through a lot of stuff on the new 2008 machine, mainly engine mapping, electronics and tyres before we get to work on the chassis proper in the up-coming tests. We always knew there was hard work ahead starting out with a completely new machine and I'm pleased we've been able to get on with it in the last few days. I improved constantly, which I'm pleased about, and we know what we have to do now. The weather was kind to us today and I had a snake-free day which was a bonus! It's time to go home now and I'm definitely looking forward to the break. I've only been at home for four days in the past six weeks and I've got my brother Tommy's wedding coming up, along with Thanksgiving, so it will be nice to get back."

Andrea Dovizioso, JiR Scot Honda: 2m 02.128s - 54 laps. “Today I rode for many laps and I must say I'm more tired on a MotoGP machine than on a 250! Anyway in such hot and humid weather conditions it's good training and I must get used to this! I'm having more and more fun and this is good as it means that my confidence with the motorbike is increasing day by day. We still have so much work to do in order to understand more how to exploit our Honda to the fullest. I still have to get used to the engine braking as well, but I'm satisfied with these tests and I go back home knowing that the team and I have done well.”

Randy De Puniet, LCR Honda: 2m 02.700s - 60 laps. “This has been a very positive test and today I continued with the Ohlins suspension, working to find the optimum set-up, especially at the rear where still I lack some connection and good feeling when I open the throttle. I have also done a lot of tyre evaluation with Michelin, with good step forward on the rear yesterday, and today tried some different compound front tyres. The crash was strange, I had the same braking and speed as the lap before, when I lost the front-end. I rode again in the afternoon but did not use a qualifier, just the latest Michelin race tyres. After just five days with Honda LCR and Michelin I’m happy with move to the LCR team and know we can be faster when we get the 2008 model Honda RC212V.“

News 17/11/2007
Lorenzo rounds off Malaysia test with promising final day in Sepang

Future Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo rounded off his second test with the factory with more steady improvement in Malaysia today, bettering his lap time from yesterday by almost a second. After intermittent rain for the last two days, the MotoGP teams were rewarded with a completely dry day today and Lorenzo made the most of the time available, completing 83 laps of the 5,548m circuit.

Lorenzo’s best time of 2’02.643, which put him seventh, was set on qualifying tyres near the end of the day. However he set his fastest lap on race tyres in the early afternoon, his time of 2.03.044 showing his improvement over the course of the test. The quickest lap of the day was set by Nicky Hayden, also on qualifying tyres, in a time of 2.00.592

The Fiat Yamaha Team will now pack up and return to Europe for a week’s rest before the final test of the year at Jerez de la Frontera in Spain on 27th, 28th and 29th November.

Jorge Lorenzo - 7th, 2’02.643, 83 Laps
“Overall I’m happy with these three days of testing. It’s been hard work but I have improved each day and especially today, when I have gone nearly one second faster with race tyres than I was yesterday. I’ve been concentrating on changing my riding style; braking later and accelerating sooner and we can see from the data that I have improved quite a lot, although we still have more to do. I am okay on the longer, faster corners but on the slower ones I have more problems. We haven’t done so much work on the tyres, just trying one different tyre, the same as we tried in Valencia, and with this tyre we improved half a second. I didn’t ride the new bike today but it was good to get the chance to try it briefly yesterday. We won’t start working on it properly until January; for now the important thing is for me to learn as much as possible about ridin g a MotoGP bike. I’ve had fun these three days and I’m quite happy with my progress, and now we will look forward to Jerez.”

Daniele Romagnoli – Team Manager
“The main use of this test has been to collect information regarding the needs of Jorge as we try to make him as comfortable as possible on our bike. We have tried to move his position on the bike slightly further back and we have made some changes here, but we are now waiting for some new parts for the future which we think will improve his position further. Overall we’ve improved his braking points and his feeling going into the corners; this is an ongoing process and we will continue to work on it over the next tests. Thanks to Jorge and to the team for their hard work and for so many laps; everything we’ve done here will help us for the future.”

Masahiko Nakajima – Fiat Yamaha Team Director
“Today we’ve had a good test and we were helped by the weather being sunny all day. Jorge managed many laps and we got through a lot of work. We’ve found a good direction now with regards to his chassis set-up and this is very encouraging news for us. Jorge, his crew and all the Yamaha engineers are all working together and sharing in his development and learning process, and we are very clear now what we have to do in preparation for the next test in Jerez. We’ve learnt a lot here and it’s been a very useful test for us.”
